Off-Grid Inverters & Chargers
The off-grid inverters and inverter-chargers category is for places without grid power or with frequent outages: remote farms and villas, shops, offices and homes that need backup. These units turn battery DC into AC and run loads independently of the grid.
Off-grid solar inverter or inverter-charger?
Wall-mounted off-grid models (the Medal Power 3.5 kW off-grid inverter and the GOGO Power pure sine solar inverter) suit stand-alone solar systems. Desktop inverter-chargers, including the Power Solid 1 kW sine inverter-charger, the Medal Power 2000 VA and the Medal Power 3000 VA inverter-charger, charge the battery while the grid is on and run loads from it during outages. Check whether each model accepts panels directly or needs a separate charge controller.
Choosing an off-grid inverter
- Power: add up loads that run together, note the difference between W and VA, and allow for motor start-up current.
- Waveform: every inverter-charger here is pure sine wave.
- Battery voltage: match the bank to the inverter's DC input, wiring identical 12 V batteries in series if needed (lithium only where the manufacturer allows it).
- Backup time: depends on bank voltage and Ah, allowable depth of discharge and load power. Browse solar batteries.
